Client and Server Standards

When developing e-learning programs, it is important to know the technical standards of the client’s IT environment. Make sure the target group has access to PCs in general, as in the case of production sides, which may only have limited access.

As a baseline regarding the client standards, please follow the recommendations of the Bayer Digital Guide to e-Learning.

As more regions and branches exclusively use mobile devices without access to a standard PC, we strongly encourage a device-independent programming design strategy when developing e-learning programs.

The following table describes the typical PC environment encountered in the Bayer network as of August 2021.

Standard Bayer PC:

Minimum screen resolution 1024 x 786
Maximum screen resolution A maximum screen resolution cannot be provided; a responsive design pattern should be applied.
Operating system Windows 10
Standard browsers Google Chrome, (New) Edge / Edge Chromium, Mozilla Firefox
Flash support No longer supported after 2020
HTML5 support Corresponding to the browsers above
Audio support Yes, but subtitles should be considered and specified with the project team

Mobile Devices:

Depending on the target audience, delivery to mobile devices should be considered. These devices usually require HTML5-based development and need to have a responsive design due to a potentially wide variety of screen resolutions.

The following tables describe the typical mobile device environment encountered in the Bayer network:

Apple iOS Devices

iPad version minimum iPad2 / iPad Air2 / iPad Pro and above
iPhone versions iPhone 6 / iPhone 6s / iPhone SE
Operating system > iOS 14.x
Standard browser Safari
Flash support No longer supported
HTML5 support Corresponding to the browsers above
Audio support Yes, but subtitles should be considered and specified with the project team

Bayer employees may use Android devices for their learning activities when on the road or at home, so it might be necessary to support these devices as well. When making this decision at the beginning of the development phase, we recommend that you also determine the minimum standards that these devices need to meet.

Mobile device users might use the SF Learning App on their device. For security reasons this app needs to be downloaded through the Bayer app store — not through the native app stores on the device. However, mobile users may also choose to use their native mobile browsers (Safari or Android browser) to access SuccessFactors LMS / My Learning.

External users will not have access to the mobile Learning app. They have to launch the content a browser (e.g., Safari).
